Interested in homeschooling? Here is where to start.
Here is a backstory of how I started to homeschool. My oldest child went to kindergarten in a charter school. I always had this uneasy feeling every time I would send her to school. Homeschool was an option for us, but it was way down on the list. It sounded terrifying and intimidating to me. I didn’t think I was qualified or able to teach my child.
I was the mom that wanted to volunteer in her classroom any chance I could. I was the room mom and would arrive an hour before pick up time, I couldn’t bear the thought of being away from her for 5-6 hours out of the day.
A very long story, short, she had a HORRIBLE first start of the year, in kindergarten.
By the grace of God she was transferred into another teacher’s classroom. She was a Godsend to us during this time.
This was the year of 2020 and we all know what happened during this time. Distance learning was not an option for us. I didn’t want her learning through a computer screen. This is when I looked into homeschool. We started off doing the Independent Study program through the charter school. This was a good stepping stone for us at the time. So, this is one option for homeschooling (if your state allows).
For me, at the time, it was just what I needed. I didn’t have to research what curriculum I needed to use, this charter school gives you the curriculum they choose. I had a teacher that was over seeing everything I was doing. If I had any questions, she was there. The teacher would do all the record keeping for me. So, this is a great option for those wanting to dip their toes in the homeschooling world.
My daughter was needing more from her curriculum. School became a struggle, and that’s when I decided to do a home-based private school. The first thing I tell people when they ask me about homeschooling is to go to hslda.org and check out your state’s homeschooling laws, every state is different. I highly suggest purchasing the membership, it’s worth every penny. As a member you get personal legal advice. This was the first step I took, I called and asked any questions I had. They gave me step by step instructions on how to withdrawl my daughter from school and how to file the annual PSA. They are there for any questions or concerns you might have. They also provide one on one homeschool coaching. Again, I can’t recommend this enough.
Once, that was completed I got to choosing my curriculum. Each state has laws about what subjects need to be taught. Here is a map of the state laws. There are so many curriculum companies out there and it can get overwhelming. My suggestion would be to find out what style learner your child is, you can take a quiz here. It would also be helpful to learn what your personal homeschool style is. Homeschool On has a great resource, homeschool style quiz. This will help narrow down what you are looking for. We will also be sharing our personal picks for the year.
And above all else the most important thing to do is, pray. Pray your little mama heart out and God will lead you where He wants you and your child to go. Pray over your children, pray over your homeschool, and seek Him in all decisions.
